It’s the end of May in Helsinki. Spring is gently moving into summer, and I feel like I blinked and missed half of it even though my calendar has never been this full. Maybe it’s the cold snap that lingered a bit too long, the fluctuated weather, or simply the number of things happening that made time slip through my fingers.
If I had to give you a brief review: I genuinely couldn’t keep up with all the fun and energy this season had to offer.
Helsinki’s Event Overload
The moment the snow melted and the long days returned, it was like my Instagram algorithm knew I was ready to be social again. Suddenly, I was bombarded with event suggestions, everything from book markets and 10K runs to coffee tastings and flower festivals. Whether you’re into fitness, design, food, or literature, Helsinki had something for you.
Take one weekend in particular: the Antiquarian Book Days, Helsinki Coffee Week, and the Helsinki 10K were all happening at the same weekend. Different interests, same level of temptation, especially for me, because I just so happen to be into all of them.
Some events thankfully stretched over a few days, which helped. But on some days, I had to make tough choices. My social battery wasn’t always aligned with my excitement levels. At one point, I even thought of making a “missed events” list to archive things I would’ve loved to join… if only I had a clone or two.
To be honest, I felt just as overwhelmed trying to decide what to write in this blog post. So let’s start from the top and go event by event.
Antiquarian Book Day

I’ve already written a dedicated post about this delightful event here. It happened on the same weekend as Helsinki Coffee Week and the Helsinki 10K, both of which I ended up missing. I didn’t manage to get tickets for the coffee week in time, and I opted out of my annual run. Both are on my wishlist for next year, fingers crossed.
Vappu in Helsinki

Vappu is one of Finland’s biggest spring celebrations and of course, I gave it a post of its own too that you can read here. It’s such a vibrant experience that it deserves its own space. Think balloons, white hats, and picnic blankets everywhere you turn.
Viikki Grazing Season

One of the liveliest events of the season for me was witnessing the cows being released into their summer pasture. There’s something incredibly joyful about watching animals run free under the open sky, a countryside moment tucked right into the city. I’ve shared the full story in Helsinki Spring Starts in Viikki’s Fields.
Marimekko Day 2025

Thanks to being a Marimekko member, I knew about this event weeks in advance. But I didn’t expect, Akiandkoichi, a favorite selebgram duo, posting from Helsinki few days before the event. My suspicions that they were here for Marimekko Day were confirmed when they showed up at Marimekko’s Herttoniemi store and then appeared at the event itself.
Held on May 16, Marimekko Day transformed the Esplanadi Park into a vibrant outdoor runway. There were four shows throughout the day: 12:00, 1:30, 4:00, and 6:00. I went for the first one, which turned out to be the right call because it got way more crowded later. I found a space near the stage, and to my surprise, Akiandkoichi ended up standing right across from me.
The show was floral and full of color, just like Marimekko’s brand. After the fashion show, I queued for a free scoop of Kaveri ice cream. By the way, this was my first time watching a fashion show live.
Home Brew Coffee Course at Cafetoria

As my coffee curiosity has grown, I’ve been keeping an eye out for hands-on workshops. I finally joined a home brew course at Cafetoria, one of my favorite local cafés here. And I’m so glad I waited until May, only three people signed up this round, compared to eleven in April.
The smaller group meant more time for discussion and experimentation. We talked techniques, flavor profiles, and how even a single degree in temperature could affect taste. It was fascinating. I left not just with better skills, but with a deeper appreciation for the science behind a cup of coffee.
My “Missed Events” List (a.k.a. Future Spring Plans)
Here’s what I didn’t make it to this year but definitely want to join in the next spring:
- Helsinki Coffee Week
- Helsinki 10K
- Hanami at Roihuvuori
And I haven’t even listed on the library-hosted events across Helsinki.
Beneath the calm exterior of Helsinki is a city brimming with character. If you know where to look (or even if you don’t), you’ll find something happening almost every weekend. Hidden book markets, street parades, design fairs, flower festivals, cozy workshops. Curiosity is your best guide.
Don’t forget to take a closer look around, you might find a season full of things to love!
