Rabbits holding egg basket as Easter window display in Fazer Cafe Kluuvikatu, Helsinki

Easter in Helsinki: Fazer Café and Finland’s Famous Mignon Eggs

In 2025, Easter falls on April 20. Even though it’s still March, the festive mood has already taken over the city. Everywhere I look, signs of spring are blooming: bright window displays, pastel-colored decorations, and rows of chocolate bunnies lining supermarket shelves. Helsinki is starting to hum with Easter energy, and one place that never misses a beat is Fazer.

As the season of chocolate and celebration begins, I decided to visit the iconic Fazer Café Kluuvikatu, a Helsinki institution that’s been around since 1891. And let me tell you—walking into that café during Easter is like stepping into a cheerful little fairytale. Even from the outside, the windows are alive with whimsical rabbit figurines, each one holding a tiny basket of eggs. But these aren’t just any eggs. They’re the legendary Mignon eggs, one of Fazer’s most beloved Easter treats.

Fazer’s Mignon Eggs, A Finnish Easter Classic Since 1896

Fazer’s Mignon Eggs

I’d heard about these before, but seeing them up close made me even more curious. Mignon eggs have been around since 1896, yes, over a century of tradition! They’re made with a smooth almond and hazelnut nougat, poured inside a real eggshell. That’s what makes them so unique. I bought one, still wondering how on earth they get the egg out and replace it with chocolate without cracking the shell. (Seriously, it’s kind of mind-blowing.)

Cracking it open took more effort than I expected. It’s way tougher than a regular egg. I guess that’s because instead of liquid, it’s packed full of solid chocolate. But once I got it open? It was absolutely worth it. The taste is rich and nutty, not overly sweet, and it paired beautifully with my coffee. It felt like a grown-up kind of treat. Something nostalgic, but not childish.

Of course, I didn’t stop at just one egg.

Trying Fazer’s Limited Edition Easter Chocolates

Fazer has released other special editions for the Easter season, and I couldn’t resist trying the Fazerina Mousse Egg, a smooth milk chocolate egg filled with soft, orange-flavored mousse. It came in a charming little carton, like a playful nod to real eggs. There are two other flavors in the same line: Dumle-flavored mousse and peppermint cocoa, though I didn’t try those this time.

As someone who’s not usually into fruity-flavored chocolate, I was pleasantly surprised by the orange mousse. It didn’t have that artificial zing that many orange chocolates do. The flavor was subtle, well-balanced, and honestly quite enjoyable—even for someone like me who prefers their chocolate classic.

If you’re ever in Helsinki around Easter, swing by Fazer Café, even just to stare at the bunny-filled windows or grab a Mignon egg out of curiosity. It’s one of those little seasonal joys that somehow sticks with you. Sweet, weird, and kind of wonderful.
