Review: Moonlight Elk

Memoirs always offer a deeper perspective into the layers of someone’s life that shape who they are, and Moonlight Elk is no exception. The book opens the door to Christie Green’s world showing her multiple identity as she moves through life as a woman, a mother, a daughter, a granddaughter, a lover, and a hunter. Beyond this personal exploration, the memoir also turns our attention back to nature, something modern life has slowly and often unconsciously pushed to the sides.

Moonlight Elk pulls the reader to follow Green through the wilderness as she learns to live with more intention. She chronicles her journey toward self-sufficiency as a fledgling hunter. The story was in rhythm with the phases of the moon, showing how each cycle shapes her hunting grounds and mirrors emotional state. As the moon shifts, so do her reflections on boundaries, instincts, and what it means to fully inhabit her body and her life.

Green’s writes about learning to move through the world with her whole being. The writing style is rich in detail and grounded in nature as a reminder that life’s meaning often reveals itself in the smallest moments.

Green’s love for wildlife, mountains, grasslands, and the many creatures sustained by these landscapes comes through beautifully. Her connection to the outdoors, especially in her search for food, requires patience, determination, and courage. Writing from close observation and genuine curiosity, she invites us to reconsider how we relate to nature and what we might regain by paying attention again.
