How to Be Okay When Nothing is Okay eBook besides a cup of coffee and a notebook on a white table

Review: How to Be Okay When Nothing Is Okay

Self-help books and I have had a complicated relationship lately. The genre has felt so oversaturated that I did not reaching for it as frequent as I used to. So picking up How to Be Okay When Nothing Is Okay by Jenny Lawson was already a small act of courage on my part.

The introduction of this book pulled me in immediately. Lawson writes about feeling empty, about the dark thought that the world would somehow be better off without you, and I felt seen in a way I wasn’t expecting from the very first pages.

In a world full of wannabe lions, don’t be afraid to love your inner hippo.

Jenny Lawson, How to Be Okay When Nothing Is Okay

The book is full of practical tips and insights that help Lawson manage both her head and her heart. There is a chapter on defending happiness that especially hit home for me. Lawson talks about how easy it is to feel paralyzed by the weight of everything going wrong in the world, how empathy can become its own trap, leaving you too drained to enjoy the things that actually bring you joy. She makes the point that choosing to laugh, to practice self-care, to simply live, are acts of survival, not selfishness.

Each chapter is refreshingly short, which I love. This is a love letter to every self-help author and publisher out there: if you have something meaningful to say, say it well and say it in the right amount of words. Lawson does exactly that. There is no padding, no filler, no sentences that exist just to fill pages. Every word earns its place.

The result is a book that feels like a warm, witty, and wise conversation all at once. Some passages strengthen you, some make you laugh, and some just make you feel genuinely understood. It is realistic encouragement done right.
