Review: Be Ready When the Luck Happens

I have to admit that I’m always a bit cautious when a book talks about luck. Too often, it feels like “luck” is just another word for privilege, and that can be hard to digest, especially when life doesn’t hand out equal chances to everyone.

In Be Ready When the Luck Happens, Ina Garten shares the story of her life in a nice and friendly way. It reads more like a collection of memories than a deep, personal journey. She talks about her career, her famous friends, and a lot about the homes she’s bought, sold, and renovated over the years.

While she does mention some personal things, like her childhood and her choice not to have kids, those parts are very short. Most of the book focuses on her beautiful lifestyle, real estate, and social circle. She doesn’t really give advice or talk much about the hard parts of life that many people struggle with.

The title suggests we should be ready when good luck comes our way, and maybe that’s her main message: do what you love, and be prepared for the right moment. But I didn’t find it to be especially inspiring or helpful if you’re looking for something deeper or more real.

It’s a light and easy read, especially if you’re already a fan of Ina. But if you’re hoping for a inspiring or emotional story, this one might leave you wanting more.

My Favorite Bits

  • Your twenties are the time when you master what you think you’re supposed to do. But in your thirties, when you’ve figured out what you like and don’t like, and you’re more confident, you can move on to what you really want to do, which might be totally different.
  • When you’re young, you marry someone who has the qualities you wish you had. As you grow older, one of two things happens. Either you start to find those differences increasingly annoying and you grow apart, or—and this is what was happening to us—you gradually become more like each other, even as you remain who you are.
  • There’s a wonderful quote attributed to George Lucas: “We’re all living in cages with the door wide open.” That was me until I realized I had the power—and the responsibility—to set myself free. To step out of the cage of whatever I’d experienced in the past, to think for myself, and to believe in my choices.
